Gifted Math

In 4th grade, students focus on strengthening foundational skills such as multiplication and division, fractions, and multi-step problem solving. Instruction emphasizes understanding how and why math works by using multiple strategies, models, and real-world applications. Students are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections, and approach challenging problems with confidence.

In 5th grade, math learning continues to grow in complexity as students work with fractions and decimals, volume, expressions, and more advanced problem-solving situations. For students identified as gifted in mathematics, instruction may move at an accelerated pace and include deeper exploration of concepts, preparing them for middle school math coursework. Across both grades, the goal is not just to get the correct answer, but to develop flexible thinking, reasoning, and perseverance when solving problems.

Placement in gifted math services follows Ohio’s gifted education guidelines. Students are screened using multiple measures, including assessments and performance data. Families are notified if a child qualifies for gifted identification and is eligible for services. Identified students receive instruction that either enriches grade-level content (4th grade) or accelerates learning by introducing advanced material (5th grade), ensuring that instruction is matched to each student’s learning needs while supporting continued growth.
